The World Health Organization China Country Office was informed of a number of cases of pneumonia of unknown cause detected in Wuhan, Hubei Province. All cases were connected to the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan. This was the beginning of COVID-19.

Since then, as many as 274 million cases and 5.34 million deaths have been reported worldwide. After the detection of the Delta variant in India in late 2020 until the mid-2021, despite the surge of the Delta variant of COVID-19 and breakthrough cases (infection after vaccination), with the percentage of the vaccinated population rising, COVID-19 seemed to have been well under control.

However, another mutant COVID-19 variant named Omicron found in South Africa in December 2021 is currently fast spreading in the world.
